Tina Turner – Steel Claw live audio

Scroll down to content

A live version of the Tina Turner song Steel Claw. The studio version of this song appeared on Tina’s 1984 album Private Dancer, although she had already been performing this song in her live shows since the early 1980’s. The song is written by Paul Brady, an Irish singer-songwriter who also wrote the song Paradise Is Here that was featured on Tina’s 1986 Break Every Rule album. This live version of Steel Claw was featured as a b-side on several versions of the singles I Don’t Wanna Lose You and Look Me In The Heart, from her 1989 album Foreign Affair. It is unclear where this live version was recorded, the notes on the singles only state ‘recorded in Europe’. It was probably a leftover track from the recordings for her 1988 live album Tina Live in Europe. Click below to listen to the song and to read the lyrics.

Lyrics

A night in television wonderland
Just one more
Fairytale about some rich bitch
Lying by the swimming pool
Its golden school
Living’s easy when you make the rules

Last friday was the first time
It took only about half a minute
On the stairway
It was child’s play
The odds turn out even
When you give up believing in the

Cold law steel claw
Try to get on board you find the lock is on the door
Well I say ‘no way
Don’t try to keep me out or there’ll be hell to pay’
I don’t know who’s right or who’s wrong
But it doesn’t really matter when you’re lying in the gutter
Its a see saw
A long hot battle with the cold law
Is what you get for messing with the steel claw

The politicians have forgotten this place
Except for a flying visit in a black mercedes
No election time
They cross the line
And everybody runs to watch the pantomine
If they could see what’s going on around here
So many people hanging on the edge
Crying out for revolution
Retribution
The odds turn out even
When you give up believing in the

Cold law steel claw
Try to get on board you find the lock is on the door
Well I say ‘no way
Don’t try to keep me out or there’ll be hell to pay’
I don’t know who’s right or who’s wrong
But it doesn’t really matter when you’re lying in the gutter
Its a see saw
A long hot battle with the cold law
Is what you get for messing with the steel

Sometimes I think I’m going crazy
Sometimes I do a line
Makes me laugh
Makes me want to take a joyride
On the high tide
Sometimes I’m contemplating suicide
Meanwhile Eddy’s on the west coast
He’s making out with some sweet senorita
Up in Frisco you and I know
The odds turn out even
When you give up believing

Cold law steel claw
Try to get on board you find the lock is on the door
Well I say ‘no way
Don’t try to keep me out or there’ll be hell to pay’
I don’t know who’s right or who’s wrong
But it doesn’t really matter when you’re lying in the gutter
Its a see saw
A long hot battle with the cold law
Is what you get for messing with the steel

    1. I also always loved this song too, but never had it seen sung live in a show. It’s terribliy fast and a lot of lyrics. A little bit she changed the lyrics as she is doing usually. But anyway, I always wondered how she could remember all these words!!

  1. This is a great rock song, it is one of my favourites. It should never have been cut from the ‘live in Europe’ CD, ‘Private Dancer’ tour DVD and ‘Foreign Affair’ tour on VHS (live in Barcelona- do you want some action!). I always wondered if a live version is available, so I’ll be checking out Amazon-thanks Lasse.I love the picure of her, she looks a real rock chic. Thanks Ben and Sjef.

  2. I’m making a montage like film for the Tina Live In Europe album, and after discovering this song being cut from the album, I wanna add it to the video as a deleted scene. Can any of you guys find footage of Tina singing this song during the Private Dancer tour, and maybe footage of her singing Legs from the Private Dancer tour. I’m planning to release it on Tina’s 75th birthday on YouTube, could you guys promote the movie on your blog, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks, Zak
