The Story behind ‘That’s My Life’

The first idea was to produce a personal book from and with Tina for the guests of her private birthday party on November 26th. So a very limited edition only for her closest friends and family. The aim was to create the book like a very personal object, very much like Tina is, what she stands for. The reader should feel her spirit, hear her voice, recognize her style, see her dancing…
We created a book that includes the most beautiful photos of Tina by photographers like Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Anton Corbjin, Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz – just to name a few.We produced a new shooting in her home in Küsnacht that show art pieces and objects that mean a lot to Tina and that accompanied her through all her life.

These pictures give insights in her personal interests without being voyeuristic. We also asked friends and follows like Giorgio Armani, Mick Jagger, Cher, Oprah, Bryan Adams or Beyoncé to send a personal birthday letter for the book. Tina also „sacrificed“ one of her favorite original Armani dresses – each book includes a little piece of it.Then we hired the Swiss based renown Art Director Beda Achermann to design the layout for the book. He created not only a stunning book but also a beautiful golden box with a lenticular with photos by Herb Ritts as the cover.

As a special highlight the box does not only include the book, but also a ring that was designed by Tinas favorite jeweller in Zurich. You might have seen that she is wearing a thumb ring for many years. This ring is her talisman. She never puts it away. This ring is meant as a friendship ring now.
During the production process we started changing the idea – this special book and the ring will still be a present for Tinas friends and family, but Tina wanted to include her fans. She wanted to create a Collectors Item. So we decided to make a Limited Edition of 800 pieces that are for sale. Those boxes (including the book and the ring) are available from November 26th.

    1. It is really not sure, it depends on how well this limited edition sells and even if there’s a more public version, Photobooks are always very expensive (copyright fees)

  2. Fan abuse! What a public relations debacle! This could have been rolled out so differently. Cosmic shift needed in Tina’s Team personnel….

  3. I guess your paying for the ring, but a shame for all the fans who can’t afford a 2 and a half grand ring. Will hope the book may come out at some point. Then again may not bother if this is Tinas new route 🤑

    1. Hi Maura, it is expensive but if you look at the content, the design and the uniqueness of it, the price makes sense but like a lot of fans, I do understand your disappointment. Don’t stay mad too long, a public version of the book will be available in the future!
      Best!

  4. Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait for the book-only version that’s available to “everyday people”. $2750 is out of my budget. I will say, the gold thumb ring is a nice, personal touch though. I’ve always liked that she wore gold thumb rings (sometimes on both hands)

  6. What is making her millions of fans so sad is that they have stuck by her for decades, supporting her in every world tour, attending multiple times on each tour, buying her expensive concert merchandise, her albums, CDs, DVDS, books, and now musical tickets. They also follow blogs and social media pages waiting for any news or projects to support. They know every single thing about her. They know she wears a thumb ring, they know her every move, her every gesture, every dance step, her mannerisms, her life story. The high-end “collectible” book should not be limited to 800 very wealthy people who are probably not real fans, but should be a gift to her loyal fans at reasonable price—a price that is fair to Tina and her fans—because her journey to super-stardom is a paired journey with her fans. Her fans carried her on that journey. She only broke records and filled stadiums because her FANS filled those stadiums. Her millions of fans have spent well over $3000 already throughout her solo career – and many fans from before Private Dancer. Her loyal fans are the only ones who would truly appreciate all the fine details of this book. All the wealthy people she will pass this book to for free,, or the wealthy people who will buy it, will probably wonder why she included a ring and only find out that she wore a thumb ring and will find it only “interesting” vs. a true fan who would immediately what that ring is, and they would find the thumb ring as special as Tina does and would cherish it as memory of the their lifelong journey with Tina to her 80th year. At ths point, money is no object and she should pay the difference to make the LIMITED version available to her fans rather than give them a “cheap” version without the special touches only fans would appreciate. None of her fans should be kept from having one. None of her concerts were limited to 800 people. Her management wanted millions of us to spend our money on her concert tickets and we did. So where is this 800 “limited” exclusive” items coming from? Teasing fans and having them waiting on pins and needles with joyful anticipation about this “special” book only to be let down and deflated when finding out it is totally out of reach is just terrible and, frankly, it is mean. For someone who sold 200 million albums, 800 is excluding A LOT of her fans. I’ve never felt turned off by Tina until this announcement was made. It’s like a slap in the face to fans, especially as they were about to celebrate her 80th birthday. As the say, “A reputation takes a lifetime to build and seconds to destroy.” I still don’t know what to make of this, and from what I gather on the comment sections on social media and fan sites, many of the fans are hurt, disappointed and disillusioned and even a little betrayed. I’m sure we’ll get over it, but the sting is real.

    1. Hey, I don’t think Tina can be blame for this ‘upset’ , just a mishandled communication, there’s been an update from Tina about the release of a ‘bookstore’ version of the photo book! Should be sometime next year!

  8. I love Tina Turner !! But if I’m going to spend 800.00 on someone’s birthday it would be my little nieces and nephews and some other little ones dear to my heart. Or make a donation to a family in need.
Why would I spend money on someone who has more money and privileges than I and most people I know.

    1. That’s totally understandable, tho the book was marketed as a special item for Tina’s 80th, the price took everybody a bit aback but the whole box truly looks like a piece of art and with only 800 copies, it comes with a price.
But! It has been announced on Tina’s social media that a bookstore version of ‘That’s My Life’ will be released in the future!
      Best!

  9. I always thought , that as Tina suddenly wore a ring on each thumb, they represented the 2 most important men in her life. Ike, even with the abuse he was the one that gave her the first chance and Erwin Bach who has given her the love she needed. If the ring is a Talisman, then why 2? To have a replica will hold no real significance or power, that is only in the originals and the original owner. Sad that these personal things have become a commercial venture and out of reach for most. Tina herself did show signs of mobility and balance issues at the Broadway opening, and in the backstage interview with Oprah seemed to rely very much on prompts from Oprah. One wonders how Tina is really doing and how much of this commercialism she has sanctioned , and if she did, does she realize the negative impact it is having. I don’t feel this is the real Tina.

  10. Many are missing the point, getting caught up in the fact that you cannot afford it without breaking down the books pricing. A gold ring and a piece of an original Armani couture gown are significant enough for the price tag. Not to mention because of that the production of this version will not be massed produced. Truly a collectors item. Nothing to be mad about, everything is not meant for everyone. Thankfully there will be a version offered for fans that cannot afford the collectors. I however will be ordering mine and cherishing it as the collection item it is. I will give the ring to a family member as it has no significance since Tina didn’t actually wear it. All the best to y’all.

  11. First Happy 80th trust you had a wonderful day Tina. Going back to the Oprah interview with yourself and Erwin, after your wedding, both said the past is over and time to move away from that, Buddha himself says do not dwell in the past. And yet the past is all that is being generated. When the Beyond project was finished and I re listen to the spiritual messages they don’t seem have much relationship to the current activity. Personally that project was the icing on the cake as it gave such an insight to the side of Tina that few had seen or heard. If I remember the posts on this blog were some of the highest in number during that period.
With the second book already out, and Tina the Musical in various locations, and watching Oprah jump about in her seat and singing along at the Broadway show, she behaved as if it were you on the stage. And it is not. Essence of a person cannot be captured by another, the self is a compilation of the five aggregates that can maybe be copied. Like the contents of this new package, they are just copies. The Looping group have good publicity campaign. Is this the enlightenment you found?
