In a ceremony held on September 19, 2017 at the Tina Turner Museum at Flagg Grove School in Brownsville, TN, officials from Tennessee State joined Tina Turner’s longtime friend and Executive Personal Assistant Rhonda Graam and Tina Turner Museum Executive Director Sonia Outlaw-Clark, to debut the ensemble which was personally selected by the Tennessee native and international music icon.
“It is an honor for the Tennessee State Museum to receive this gift from Tina Turner for our museum’s collection,” says Tennessee State Museum Executive Director Ashley Howell. “As one of our state’s most famous entertainers, it is important for us to interpret her legacy as we present Tennessee’s rich music history for future generations. The State Museum values the relationship we have with Tina Turner Museum at the Flagg Grove School and with the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center and looks forward to future collaborations.”
The jacket and skirt were created by world renowned fashion designer Rifat Ozbek, a twice-awarded “Designer of the Year” winner by the British Fashion Council. His designs have been worn by Tina, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Sarah-Jessica Parker, and Kylie Minogue among many others. The items Tina selected were donned in a photoshoot for her six-time platinum Foreign Affair album with the images above captured by Herb Ritts in 1989. Released on September 13, 1989, the album featured what would become signature hits “The Best,” “Steamy Windows,” and “I Don’t Wanna Lose You.”
Fans can view Tina’s outfit on temporary display at the Tina Turner Museum throughout the 2017 Tina Turner Heritage Days (TTHD) this Friday, September 22
to Sunday, September 24, before it is sent to the Tennessee State Museum.
The 2017 TTHD will feature tours to Tina’s hometown of Nutbush, TN, a Q&A with former Ikette Miss Robbie Montgomery of the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Sweetie Pie’s and a performance at Tina’s former high school Carver High by Las Vegas Diva Larry Edwards (Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous). TINA says the hunt for the actress to portray her continues:
She will definitely have to be able to sing,’ she says, ‘even if she can’t dance. But she will dance, because the choreographer (Anthony van Laast) of the show will be able to pull it out of her!
‘We’re not pushing that she has to be pretty; but she has to be in shape. She can’t be fat.’

And if you needed one more reason to convince you, any TINA fan should see from his own eyes the TINA Museum and why in itself, it is a full circle representation for Tina; The land where the small school for African American girls that little Anna Mae and her sister attended was donated by an ancestor of the family, allowing Black children from this area to have access to education. And that same one-room school where Tina learned how to read & write would, years later, be transferred from her original location near Nutbush to Brownsville, undergoing drastic transformations to become the Tina Turner Museum. It now holds memorabilia and precious artefacts from Tina’s amazing career. Watch this clip below, featuring Tina Turner on the TV special African Americans Lifes 2, to learn more about the rich history behind this piece of landmark!
Some activities require pre-registration. Check out this page for more information. Tickets and packages available for purchase online or at the door.

“The lotus is a flower that grows in the mud. The thicker the mud, the more beautiful the flower blooms.” This Buddhist wisdom certainly rings true for Tina Turner’s life story. The seed of Tina Turner was planted deep in the Tennessee mud, Nutbush to be precise. A small town in the deep-south of the United States. Tina is not a person for nostalgia. So when she left Nutbush in her mid-teens, she hardly ever looked back.
By Erin Shaw Street – You know that Tina Turner song “Nutbush City Limits?” It’s about a real place–Nutbush, Tennessee, where she grew up. (Go on, you know you want to dance in your chair just thinking of the melody.) This week a museum dedicated to Tina’s legacy–and the community where she was raised–opens just down the road from Nutbush. The Flagg Grove School, where she spent her formative years, opens to the public this Friday after a painstaking restoration.
