TINA & ALAIA

Tina Turner & Azzedine Alaia by Peter Lindbergh
TINA & Azzedine Alaia by Peter Lindbergh

It is with sadness that we heard yesterday the passing of Franco Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaia at the age of 77. His seductive, clinging clothes were a massive success in the eighties and he was named by the media ‘The King of Cling’. Devotees included both fashion-inclined celebrities and fashionistas: Grace Jones (wearing several of his creations in A View to a Kill),  Raquel Welch, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Brigitte Nielsen, Naomi Campbell and of course our TINA.

After buying Alaia’s clothes in L.A, the Break Every Rule singer personally called him while in Paris and asked to meet him. The two would create an intimate relationship and he ended up designing some of Tina’s most memorable stage outfits as well as personal clothes.

And in memory of Mr. Alaia, here’s an audience recording of Tina performing ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose You’ live on June 28, 1990, at the Palace of Versailles in France. The quality of the recording is not the best, but what is funny about the track is Tina’s introduction:

“I’m gonna do this one for, my boyfriend. I call him Azzedine.”

An Overnight Sensation

TINA TURNER AT WEMBLEY ARENA, LONDON, BRITAIN - 1987
TINA Live at Wembley Arena – June 1987 (Rex)

Still celebrating the 30th Anniversary of TINA’s Break Every Rule World Tour with an upload this week of selected songs from Tina’s performance at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany on July 3rd, 1987.  An audience recording of good quality if you consider it was recorded 30 years ago! Singing David Bowie’s ‘Girls’ and ‘It’s Only Love’ with John Miles, this concert tour is interesting on many levels:  Tina performed in front of massive audiences in Europe and across the world, she sang certain songs she would never perform live again and unfortunately not that many footage of the Break Every Rule Tour have emerged. But let’s not lose hope to get our hands on more in the future and you can be sure you’ll find it on Tina Turner Blog! And if you want to get a better experience with the audio below, I would advice you to use headphones.

Tonight, when I arrived I looked out and I saw so many people, I felt good! Thank You for coming!

TINA: A Shamanic Force Awaken

Tina Turner Regula Curti Dechen Shak Dagsay - Beyond Music .jpg

10,000,000 views! 10 Million! The video clip for the mantra Sarvesham Svastir Bhavatu  reached this incredible number earlier this month. An incredible figure and the proof that TINA has become an incredible ‘shamanic force’ by bringing millions of people across the world around her mantras and buddhist teachings. With the release later this year of the fourth Beyond album ‘Awakening Beyond’, let’s have a look back at the birth of the project with a radio interview recorded in 2009 with Deepak Chopra and an article published in Science of Mind back in March 2011.

In the worst of times, Tina, a deeply spiritual woman who was raised Baptist, sought solace in reciting “The Lord’s Prayer” and, later, an ancient and mystical Buddhist chant to connect to a higher power beyond her human understanding. She began chanting “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” over and over. “I found something changed inside of me, the load of the pressure of my life started to lift . I started to become happy, and then, slowly, the thoughts came to me of what to do to change my life.”

The power of prayer

Tina Turner believes in it with all her heart, so much so that in 2009, she joined creative forces with two renowned musicians based in Switzerland, one of Christian background and the other a Tibetan Buddhist, to go beyond religion, beyond theology, to go “beyond the beyond,” as Su Poet Rumi wrote, to meet together in a eld of pure potentiality. The result is a remarkable music CD entitled Beyond: Buddhist and Christian Prayers.

‘Break Every Rule’ Interview

tina turner break every rule interview cd lp .png

“People come and say ‘I have to get your autograph because my son is always trying to get me to go back to work and I say ‘no I am too old’ and they say ‘well, Tina Turner did it’! It seems that I have broken all the rules!”

Back in 1986, Tina Turner was heavily promoting the follow up album to the masterpiece Private Dancer, her second solo album, Break Every Rule. To support the release,  Tina recorded a long interview as promo material for the radio. Here is today!

The interview is 55 minutes long and a lot of subjects are reviewed:

Of course, Tina talks about the recording and the songs of her album BER but also about her autobiography I, Tina, her relationship with Ike, David Bowie and much more. A very candid and fun Tina who sometimes reveals more that you would expect! And that’s what we like!

Everything under the sun

Tina Turner - Australia Live .jpgIf you mention River Deep Mountain High to any music connaisseur, they’ll mention Tina Turner & Phil Spector. The masterpiece created by the two is the most famous songs of their collaboration but of course more B-sides and rare tracks have emerged over the years. And you can always count on a friend to get you back to those gems! Earlier today, TINA fan & friend Enrico send me remastered version of ‘A man is a man is man’, ‘Two to Tango’, ‘Down Down’ & ‘Watcha Gonna Do’ and offered to share them on the blog! So here their along with a very interesting story by David Young about Turner & Spector work.

‘The Story of Tina Turner ‘Every Under The Sun”
By David Young for the Spectropop Group

Since the late 1970s, tapes have circulated among collectors of Tina Turner singing a Spectoresque version of the song “Everything Under the Sun,” written by Bob Crewe and Gary Knight. After remaining in the vaults for ten years, the song had seen official release in 1976 in a Spector-produced version by The Ronettes on the Phil Spector International compilation Rare Masters Vol. 2, and had previously been issued in radically differing versions by The Walker Brothers and Jackie DeShannon.

August, 17th 1984 – Let´s go back to 1984, zoom in to August in the time dimension, narrow it down to the evening of the 17th, and find a location called the Park West. We might even add that we have a ticket – one of not more than 800-1000 – to a concert of a newcomer – or rather an old war horse but now in new armor and carrying new arrows in her quiver: Tina Turner will play the Park West tonight on her “Private Dancer Tour”.

One Night in Paris

Tina Turner - Stade De France - Paris 2000

It was fifteen years ago today! Fifteen years! And yet it still feels like yesterday.

Back in 2000, Tina Turner was back on the road with the massive stadium Twenty Four Seven World Tour. And of course, France is always on the map when it comes to Tina tours.

Take a 60 years old Rock Legend, add a 2 hours non-stop show and 80.0000 people cheering and you’ll end up with probably the best concert you’ll ever seen!

And since we like celebrations on the Tina Turner Blog, let’s celebrate this amazing show with photos and audio from that evening!

Enjoy and let us know what you think! Oh and don’t miss the very special sing along version of “The Best”…
