TINA: RockQueen – Mother – Fighter

I’m proud that my career continues…

Just in time for TINA’s 80th birthday, German channel ZDF will broadcast a new documentary entitled ‘Tina Turner: RockQueen-Mother-Fighter’ focusing on Tina’s incredible life. As part of ZDF History series, the 45 minute piece will air November 17 at 23.50.

Here is what German newspaper Weser Kurier published a couple of days ago about the documentary:

Growing up as the youngest daughter of a pastor’s family in Tennessee, the young Anna Mae Bullock did not have it easy: her hometown Nutbush in the south of the US was characterized at that time by racism, fear, violence and considerable social ruthlessness.

“I had to learn to deal with prejudice, so my attitude to life is marked by iron self-discipline,”

explains Tina Turner in an interview in 1980 in the new “ZDF History” documentary entitled ‘Tina Turner – Rockqueen. Mother. Fighter. ‘  At a very young age, her life took a decisive turn: At the age of 16, Anna Mae met Ike Turner in St. Louis, an “important talent scout,” says Kurt Loder, a music journalist, in the 45-minute portrait film.

Of course, the relationship between Anna Mae and Ike Turner, with all their excesses, has been declined enough. She has developed “from a mate to a marital hell in the end, a marriage tyranny”, said Dominik Wichmann, a biographer of Tina Turner. The superstar himself describes it differently in her biography: “My relationship with Ike was doomed to failure when he realized that I would secure his income. “Ike Turner’s violent nature in the band is already known at this time: he beated and raped Tina. “She could not know that it would escalate,” explains Dominik Wichmann. In an interview in 2018, the dazzling icon tells about her wedding night: “They pushed a piece of paper over to us, we signed, and then we went to a brothel and watched people having sex.”

As a turning point, the superstar reflects on her suicide attempt of 1968:

“When I emerged from the darkness, I knew that I was destined to live.”

She starts defending herself against Ike, not least through Buddhism. She uses them to “gather inner strength,” she says. Faith has built up and convinced her to leave Ike, to be free, ” said Kurt Loder, also a Tina Turner biographer in the past.

Only ten years later, with the help of Roger Davies, Tina Turner made the big breakthrough: her album “Private Dancer” hit the bill and made her a star all over the world. Not only in terms of her career turned the life of the dazzling rock icon for the better, even in private it is now better. In Erwin Bach she found a new partner. In 2013, Tina Turner married her 16-year-younger German partner. Because of many health problems, he even donated one of his kidneys.

To date, the American has not lost the desire for show business: “I’m proud that my career continues, despite my age,” said the rock legend to the ZDF camera.

  6. As stated, this article was first published in German in Weser Kurier. As posted the last sentence begins, “Bis heute hat die Amerikanerin die Lust am Showbusiness nicht verloren:”

This has been mis-translated to “To date, the American has lost the desire for show business.”

A correct translation would read (important missing word emphasized) “To date, the American has _not_ lost the desire for show business:”

(Yes, I am aware of how the Google Translator translates the sentence, but the Google Translator is wrong in this case. Ask anyone who has some facility in both languages.)

With this correction, the last sentence now makes sense, both in the meaning of Tina’s words, and with Tina’s artistic psychology. We’ve seen this pattern before. Exhaustion at the end of a tour, not wanting to even think about performing, just wanting to rest, to have some real downtime. But then, a few years later and rested up, she starts getting artistically itchy again.

  10. Another documentary to bash Ike? He did not rape Tina, why does the media always print that and why always focus on the negative. Ike is dead but they have living children and grandchildren. Hopefully they talk more about Tina as a mother, her faults and strengths without constantly dismissing Ike’s influence.
