Tina Turner: ‘Souvenirs, Souvenirs’

Scroll down to content

Back in 1983, Tina Turner was hard at work to prepare her 1984 monster comeback. The general audience however, was mostly in the dark about what was going on in Tina’s career. So much so that a French TV producer thought it to be appropriate to make a nostalgic retrospective documentary with the appropriate title ‘Souvenirs, Souvenirs’. Rock Dinosaur Johnny Hallyday takes on the role of the singing television host. Little did they know the best was yet to come…

    1. Haha yes Johnny is a bit annoying and even if the show is scripted, at the beginning of the documentary when talking about Tina’s childhood, he says “Born Annie Mae Braddock”….

      1. In my opinion, Johnny with his tone of voice and and serious speech makes the story more dramatic and interesting, not to mention that it sounded like a farewell of the artist.. 😉 and fortunately it was not..

  4. If I’m not wrong Tina was usually invited as a has-been star to past great figures shows or other singers’ shows. I’m nearly sure Tina was having great moments from that era also, and enjoying freedom. I remember very well this special, they were airing it after Private Dancer boom. Thanks for posting.

  5. Nice simple documentary. Where do you find this material, guys? Always surprising. I like this Tina pre-pop/rock superstar… To me she was on the way to planetary explosion on this period of her life. I like the interview, always down to earth and she looks relaxed. Good job as always. Thanks. Some songs I did not know or hear about before (Lion, Delilah, etc.)

    1. Yes Cergio, and they used techniques like the zoom freezing effect to make the interview and Tina’s presence even more appealing and link it to the footage. Besides, light worked so well for TIna in this Souvenirs special, looking so atractive and beautiful. The 80’s was an internetless era but they were masters in marketing and that was decisive for her comeback as well.
