“I bet you looked handsome on your wedding day
So strong, so fine, so tall
Though I was standing in the church that day
And I couldn’t see a thing at all”
By Ben – Being a legendary duo, Ike and Tina Turner are part of American popular culture and it is not rare to hear or see references of the notorious duo in movies, series, cartoons… A great opportunity to give a glimpse of the couple’s work to a new audience and sometimes the chance to see a not-so-famous Ike & Tina Turner song getting a second life.
Last year, US tv show “True Detective” in an episode entitled “Haunted House” (S1 E06) paid tribute to Ike and Tina using in its soundtrack a rare gem from the couple! In the episode credits and on IMDB the song is listed as “uncredited”. No lyrics nor information on Google as well…
Until I found a trace on the internet of a 1963 song written by Johnny Cole and performed by Miles Stones being the original recording of the song. The “Tina version” is just a womanized version of the song. But not just that actually! Out of the massive work produced by Ike Turner and the countless covers, some of them are really superior to the majority.
“Too Many Tears” could remind us of wedding songs such as “All I Could Do Was Cry” or “Please, Please, Please” but it has something more to it. The way Tina delivers the first line hooks you up immediately. The song is very graphic so to speak and would perfectly fit a Tarantino movie or, as it happened, a tv series.
Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy the song as much as I do! Oh and by the way, in my research, I came across a remix version of the song from the Soul Masters CD that I’ve included in the post!

Lyrics
I bet you looked handsome on your wedding day
So strong, so fine, so tall
Though i was standing in the church that day
And i couldn’t see a thing at all
Cause there were
Too many tears in my eyes
There were
Too much pain in my heart
Too many tears in my eyes
I just had to let the teardrops fall
I heard the choir starting to sing
And i whispered lover goodbye
And when the preacher said i would place the ring
I tried so very hard not to cry
But they were
Too many tears in my eyes
There were
Too much pain in my heart oh yeah
Too many tears in my eyes
I had just had to let the teardrops fall
Ouuuh Ouuuh (sobbing)
I thought the preacher said
You’re man and wife
Congratulations to you
Though people started throwing shoes and rice
But i was trying to get a last look at you
But they were
Too many tears in my eyes
There were
Too much pain in my heart oh yeah
Too many tears in my eyes
I had just had to let the teardrops fall
Too too too many tears in my eyes
Too much pain in my heart
Hummm Hummm
They too too too many tears in my eyes
Too much pain in my heart
Yeah Yeah

Merci Ben !

Does anyone know when Tina recorded this version? I think it was first released on the album “Finger Poppin ‘… The Warner Brothers Years” (1988), but the recording must be earlier and I’d like to know when.
