Remembering Kenny

Kenny Moore - 1997Twenty years ago, on March 25, 1997, Tina Turner’s charismatic pianist and backing vocal Kenny Moore passed away while on tour in Australia. An incredible musician and fantastic showman, Kenny was a key member of Tina’s band from her early solo career in McDonald’s conventions and hotels to the biggest stadiums in the world. His flamboyance and charisma made him the best audience entertainer when Tina was offstage changing outfit. His additions to Tina’s songs and concerts are memorable and all part of the show. The chemistry between them was unique and you can’t sing a live Tina song without doing the ‘Kenny Parts’. I had the chance to meet a couple of people who knew him and from everything you can read about him, he was a genuinely nice, caring and loving person, living for his art.Tina Turner & Kenny Moore Live .jpgBorn in 1952 in Boston, Kenneth M. Moore was raised on gospel musc, joining a family group called ‘The Moore Singers’. Classical trained on piano, Moore got his first break in 1973 when he performed behind Duke Ellington on a television programme, and then as a vocalist behind the Rev James Cleveland. Finding work as a session played, he backed Aretha Franklin, Billy Preston, Carly Simon, Elton John and Ray Charles. As a solo artist he released an album on his own label in 1987 ‘Have you got a moment?’.

Kenny joined Tina Turner’s band in 1977 and performed on several of her albums. He passed away in 1997 in Sydney, Australia during Tina’s Wildest Dreams World Tour. Chuck Booker replaced Moore for the remaining dates of the tour. Tina Turner dedicated every performances of the tour thereafter to Moore.

Tina Turner in her own words

Tourbook - Wildest Dreams Tour - p15.jpg

Few people on this planet have had a life like Tina Turner. There’s been books, documentaries and even a movie about it. But only Tina can tell the real truth and how she became this bigger than life icon. Back in 1996, while promoting the gigantic  Wildest Dreams Tour, Tina did a lot of interviews including this in-depth one called “Tina Turner: In her own words” broadcasted on Radio 2. It is more likely a longer  interview Tina did with Kurt Loder, parts of it could be find in ‘The Girl From Nutbush’. But still lots on unheard before stuff: going through a lot of topics like childhood, her children, fame and much more, Tina opens herself and tells it like it is! Enjoy!

“The secret of my great good looks”

Tina Turner - Wildest Dreams Tour Report - Boulevard Magazine 1996 - Cover

“I keep trying to retire. I’ve been working for 36 years now. I asked Roger to announce my retirement after my last tour ended in 1991, but he kept the stage, he kept the lights and he kept the costumes in case i “changed my mind”. He says if i ever stop working, i’ll get really old overnight. He’s probably right.”

It’s been a while since we’ve uploaded rare magazines scans from the Tina Turner Blog’s vault so today it’s time for a new entry! A great report and interview behind the scenes of the Wildest Dreams World Tour back in 1996. Follow a day in the life of Tina on tour in Sheffield UK, in her hotel room, rehearsing before showtime, inside the diva’s dressing room… Great photos and candid interview where Tina is asked about her breathtaking appearance for a then 57 years old rock legend but also about her sons, her faith and a lot more. High quality scans of the magazine inside the article. Enjoy!

Queen of the Arena

Tina Turner Live in Amsterdam - September 1996 - Mark Allan/Alpha

Tina Turner Live in Amsterdam – September 1996 – Mark Allan/Alpha

By Ben – I am pretty sure that 20 years after her three legendaries concerts at (at the time brand new) Amsterdam Arena, Tina Turner’s voice still resonates inside the stadium. Not a single time have i passed in front of this giant monument without thinking of these concerts. I guess I can talk in Sjef’s name to say it’s probably the same for him. 1996. Wildest Dreams Tour. 3 nights, 160,000 cheering fans from across the world attending the rendez- vous given by the 57 years old Lioness. Massive promotion, massive production, massive crowd, and you can always count on the Dutch to pays Tina her dues.

I’ve probably watched and listened, dissected and studied this concert more than it is allowed until a few weeks ago, fellow Tina fan Jamie told us about an unseen tv version. He found out about it while “Missing You” was blasting on British cable tv. Of course, I couldn’t help investigating and finding out more about that mysterious version. After watching again the Original TV broadcast, followed by a LaserDisc version and finally the DVD, I could certainly noticed a few differences between them but couldn’t imagine there might be even more. But it did happen! After weeks of research I finally got my hand on the new version Jamie mentioned. And what a surprise:

New camera angles, a clearer definition to satisfy your die hard fan appetite but mostly a new audio mix giving Tina’s voice more presence, more power and strength than it ever did on the previous supports. I strongly advice you, if you can, to watch and listen to the following videos with headphones! So for a starter (and after a paramount work of time on the video quality) and for all your delight here’s the “new” version of Missing You and as bonus since it’s turning 20 years old this year, the gold and honey trap, Goldeneye! Enjoy!

This post will be updated often in the future with new HD uploads from Tina Turner live in Amsterdam 1996. We’ll keep you in touch on our Facebook, Twitter and Youtube channels!
